Angel Javier Rodriguez, 19, faces a Capital Murder charge after authorities say he fatally shot two siblings outside a trailer park in the 200 block of W. Canino Road on Sunday, July 26, during a dispute over a child custody exchange.

Karen Rivera, 18, and her brother Alberto Sidonio, 29, were found in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on X that Rodriguez had been booked into Harris County Jail on the Capital Murder charge the same day. Rodriguez is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

What investigators say happened

Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the shooting around 11 a.m. July 26. According to ABC13, investigators determined the confrontation began when Rodriguez arrived to pick up his 2-year-old child with Rivera without a car seat.

When another family member came to retrieve the child instead, Rodriguez allegedly ambushed Rivera and shot her multiple times. Sidonio came outside and stepped in front of his sister to shield her but was also shot, according to the sheriff's office.

The Houston Chronicle reported that family members attempted to save the siblings before emergency crews arrived.

Deputies also believe Rodriguez fired at several other people at the scene, including the victims' mother. No one else was struck. The 2-year-old was not harmed and was picked up by another family member.

Arrest and charges

Rodriguez fled in a vehicle after the shooting. Humble PD officers and HCSO patrol and K-9 units located him in the 8800 block of Will Clayton Road, about 20 minutes from the scene, according to Gonzalez. He was taken into custody without incident.

A Capital Murder conviction in Texas carries a sentence of life in prison without parole, or the death penalty if prosecutors pursue it.

Rodriguez's first court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center. The outcome of that hearing has not been confirmed.
