CenterPoint Energy has hardened more than 500 miles of power lines across Greater Houston, a milestone the utility announced Tuesday, Aug. 4, with the Atlantic hurricane season underway.

The work falls under CenterPoint's Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative, launched in August 2024 after Hurricane Beryl knocked out power to more than 2 million Harris County residents, including neighborhoods across Spring and unincorporated north Harris County. Beryl's 80-mph winds caused more than $28 billion in damage regionwide, according to Harris County Precinct 4.

The numbers have added up. According to CenterPoint's announcement, crews have installed 75,500 stronger, storm-resilient poles, buried 850 miles of power lines underground, cleared 13,000 miles of high-risk vegetation near lines and added 750 automation devices that can "self-heal" to reduce outage duration.

The utility is on track to reach 750 miles of hardened lines by year's end and projects the combined upgrades will help customers avoid more than 150 million outage minutes by the close of 2026.

Nathan Brownell, CenterPoint's vice president of resilience and capital delivery, said in the announcement that the company will not stop until it has built what it calls the most resilient coastal grid in the country.

The improvements already showed results in 2025, when CenterPoint reported a more than 25% drop in customer outage minutes compared to 2024 and a 50% reduction in vegetation-related outages, according to the company's 2025 sustainability report. KPRC Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez noted in January 2026 that the utility's post-Beryl tree trimming meant any winter storm outages would likely be isolated rather than widespread.

CenterPoint does not break out how many of the 500 hardened miles run through Spring specifically. Residents can check their own neighborhood's progress on the utility's online Community Progress Tracker at CenterPointEnergy.com/Progress.

The company also opened a new Emergency Operations Center for year-round coordination with local officials and emergency responders. Spring-area customers can sign up for CenterPoint's Power Alert Service at CenterPointEnergy.com to receive outage updates by text, email or phone.
