A 51-year-old man died Sunday, Aug. 2, after his Nissan Rogue left the Grand Parkway near Northcrest Drive, went airborne over an embankment, and landed upside down in a retention pond next to the Amazon delivery station in Spring.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Beau Beaty, speaking at the scene, said witnesses reported the driver drifting off the roadway before the SUV launched over the embankment.

"It went airborne into the retention pond near the Amazon facility here," Beaty told ABC13.

First responders performed CPR on the man at the scene. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

HCSO has not released his name.

Photos shared by Precinct 4 officials showed the vehicle resting wheels-up in the water. The Amazon delivery station at 22300 Northcrest Drive is a 219,000-square-foot facility that opened in September 2021 and sits adjacent to State Highway 99, giving drivers in the area a familiar landmark for the crash location.

Conflicting early reports

Harris County Precinct 4 initially reported the driver had exited the vehicle safely. HCSO later corrected that account and confirmed the fatality. ABC13 issued an editor's note acknowledging the updated information.

Cause unknown

Investigators have not said what caused the driver to leave the roadway. HCSO has offered no determination as of Monday, Aug. 3.

Traffic on the Grand Parkway was restricted Sunday afternoon while deputies worked the scene. The single-vehicle crash remains under investigation, and HCSO has not announced a timeline for releasing additional findings.
