Klein ISD named police dispatcher Nicole Edwards as its 2026 Patriot Day first responder honoree on Friday, Sept. 11.

Edwards has worked at the Klein ISD Police Department for more than 17 years. The district publishes the annual recognition each Sept. 11 to honor a first responder within the Klein community on the anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

As a dispatcher, Edwards is often the first person contacted when a crisis unfolds on a Klein ISD campus. She takes initial reports, relays information to officers and coordinates backup from EMS or fire crews, according to the district.

"I'm the calm behind the radio; I'm the calm during the storm," Edwards said in the district's profile.

The role is personal for Edwards. Her own children attended Klein ISD schools and graduated from the district. She said she has watched students grow up over her 17 years on the job, seeing them in third grade, at fifth-grade milestones, through high school homecomings and football games.

She said she cares about all of them.

Edwards recalled the Sept. 11 attacks as a moment that still shapes her approach to the work. She said she can still picture herself frozen in front of the television, wondering what was happening and why anyone would be so cruel.

That memory informs how she handles emergencies. Edwards said responding to a crisis is instinct. Someone is hurting, and you get in and do what you can, she said. She acknowledged fear is part of the job but said she sets it aside and picks it up later.

Klein ISD Police Department serves the Spring-area district's campuses and facilities. Edwards' 17-year tenure with the department spans nearly the entire post-Sept. 11 era of school safety operations.
