Spring-area residents can attend free Hispanic Heritage Month events at Lone Star College campuses starting Tuesday, Sept. 15, with activities running through Oct. 15.

The college system is hosting games, STEM workshops, film screenings and food-themed gatherings open to students, employees and community members, according to a system press release. Lone Star College serves about 100,000 students across eight campuses and more than 20 locations in the Houston area.

LSC-Kingwood President Melissa N. Gonzalez called the month a time to recognize the cultures and contributions that strengthen the college system's communities.

Several events land at campuses within reach of Spring residents. Here are the first scheduled activities:

Wednesday, Sept. 16

  • LSC-Conroe Center: Hispanic Heritage Month Games and Activities, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., room CC 105
  • LSC-Tomball: STEMos Juntos, a STEM-focused event, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Commons and C211 Science First Success Center
  • LSC-CyFair: Screening of Stand and Deliver with Philosophy Goes to the Movies and Mexican American Studies, 3:30 to 6 p.m., CASA 110
  • LSC-Houston North Fallbrook: Walk It Like I Taco-It, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Campus Lobby

Later in the month

  • Monday, Sept. 21: America 250: The Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, 2 to 3 p.m., LSC-Tomball Community Library
  • Sept. 30 through Oct. 2: Creating Panamanian Molas, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., LSC-Atascocita Center, room AC 125

Spring ISD is also marking the month.

Superintendent Kregg Cuellar said in a Sept. 8 district announcement that the month is "an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of our Hispanic community, honor the pride they bring to our schools and ensure every student knows their heritage and that their story matters."

LSC-North Harris, the campus established in 1972 by voters in the Aldine, Humble and Spring school districts, does not appear on the published event schedule. The college system said additional events may be added throughout the month.
