Constable Mark Herman is urging Spring-area drivers to stop running red lights after Precinct 4 deputies responded to four major crashes and made at least five DWI arrests between Saturday and Monday.

Herman's office posted the warning Monday, August 3, tying it to National Stop on Red Week, which runs August 2–8. The national campaign, organized by the National Coalition for Safer Roads, comes as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that red-light running killed 1,119 people and injured 141,000 more nationwide in 2024.

The local stakes were already on display. On Sunday, August 2, Precinct 4 deputies investigated major crashes at four Spring-area intersections: the 22500 block of Kuykendahl Road, North Grand Parkway at Kuykendahl Road, Dowdell Road at Spring Willow Drive, and Cypresswood Drive at Dry Springs Lane. The Cypresswood crash shut down westbound lanes entirely.

The Kuykendahl Road crash involved a single vehicle whose driver showed signs of intoxication and was being investigated for DWI, according to the constable's office.

DWI enforcement didn't let up heading into the workweek. On Monday, August 3, Deputy Constable Green stopped a vehicle near 12600 Veterans Memorial Drive for non-functioning taillights and arrested the driver on suspicion of DWI. The same day, Deputy Constable Johnson pulled over a speeding driver at 18000 Huffmeister Road who was also taken into custody for DWI.

Those Monday arrests followed three DWI arrests on Saturday, August 1, near Aldine Westfield and Cypresswood, Jones Road and Millridge North, and 290 Cypresswood Drive.

Herman called red-light running one of the leading causes of intersection crashes and said it is entirely preventable. His message to Spring drivers: "Stop. Look. Stay Safe."

The campaign also falls during back-to-school season, when more children and families are on Spring-area roads.
