A 10-year-old Spring girl suffered serious injuries Aug. 18 after riding an electric scooter into an intersection and being struck by a car, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.

The crash at Lincolns Meadow Drive and Dukes Run Drive was one of at least four collisions involving children on e-scooters or e-bikes in northwest Harris County over roughly four weeks. The string of crashes has since turned fatal: an 11-year-old Katy ISD student died after a vehicle struck the child while riding an e-scooter in Katy, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Precinct 4's preliminary investigation found the Spring girl entered the intersection without stopping at a stop sign before a motor vehicle struck her, Fox 26 Houston reported. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Deputies applied a tourniquet to control significant bleeding before the girl was taken to a hospital in The Woodlands. She was transferred the next morning to a hospital in downtown Houston. Precinct 4 said she was in stable condition. Her name has not been released.

Later that week, a 14-year-old riding a scooter was struck by a car in The Woodlands, according to the Houston Chronicle. Both children were hospitalized.

By late August, Precinct 4 deputies had responded to at least four such crashes in the area over approximately four weeks, KHOU reported.

"Honestly, unfortunately, it's happening way too often, almost weekly now," Captain Zitzmann with the Precinct 4 Constable's Office told Fox 26 on Aug. 28. "And to make it worse, it seems like these kids are getting younger and younger and injuries are getting worse."

The Katy crash killed an 11-year-old who attended Tays Junior High School. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded around 5:09 p.m. to the collision at Roesner Road and Elk Ridge Lane. Katy ISD confirmed the student's enrollment and expressed condolences in a statement.

Houston-area governments have begun tightening rules. Houston City Council approved a citywide nighttime curfew on e-scooters from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., according to the Houston Chronicle. In Pearland, parents can be cited if their child violates city e-scooter rules. Conroe ISD banned students from riding e-bikes and e-scooters on district campuses.

No similar policy response from Harris County, Spring ISD or Klein ISD has been announced.

Precinct 4 urged parents to closely supervise young riders and asked drivers to stay alert on neighborhood streets.
