A 16-year-old Spring High School student has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing I-45 on foot near Louetta Road.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the death Saturday, Sept. 19, on X, calling it a sad update to the crash that happened Friday, Sept. 18. The teen was transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, where he was pronounced deceased.

On the evening of Sept. 18, Gonzalez had posted that two teen students, both believed to be 16 years old, had attempted to cross the freeway and that one was hospitalized in critical condition. By Saturday morning, the sheriff's office confirmed the teen had not survived.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), two teens were near a Home Depot in the 20400 block of the North Freeway on Sept. 18 and attempted to cross the southbound lanes on foot. One teen saw a pickup truck approaching and stopped. The other did not stop and was struck.

The driver, an adult male, attempted to slow down and avoid hitting the student, according to ABC 13. He remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

No charges have been filed.

The investigation remains open, according to Click2Houston.

HCSO confirmed both teens attend Spring High School but said it could not confirm whether they were supposed to be in school at the time of the crash. The teen's name has not been released.

Spring ISD has not publicly commented on the student's death. ABC 13 reported it had reached out to the district for comment but received no response.

HCSO Lt. Terry Garza issued a traffic alert shortly after the crash on Sept. 18, reporting that the collision in the southbound Diamond Lane had shut down multiple lanes of I-45. CW39 reported drivers were urged to use the Hardy Toll Road as an alternate route while HCSO District 1 deputies worked the scene.
