A 17-year-old faces two felony charges after firing a gun at a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy who responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex in northwest Harris County on Thursday, July 30.
Kyel Evans was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (family violence), Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced on X on July 30.
Deputies were dispatched to 14906 Westpark Drive for a family disturbance involving a weapon, Gonzalez said in an earlier post describing the initial response. When they arrived, Evans fired shots at deputies.
No deputies were injured.
Evans was taken into custody at the scene.
The aggravated assault on a peace officer charge is a first-degree felony under Texas law, carrying a potential sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison. Because Evans is 17, whether he will be prosecuted as an adult or a juvenile has not been announced, and no court date or bond information has been released.
The 14900 block of Westpark Drive sits in unincorporated Harris County, an area patrolled by HCSO rather than a municipal police department.
