A teenager died and three others were hospitalized after a vehicle fleeing Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) deputies crashed near Westfield High School on Ella Boulevard late Sunday, Sept. 13.

The incident began around 11:05 p.m. when deputies responded to reports of a parking lot takeover near Veterans Memorial Drive and FM 1960, according to KHOU. Witnesses reported vehicles doing donuts with passengers sitting on the doors.

A patrol unit attempted a traffic stop on a black Infiniti G37. The driver fled.

The vehicle headed eastbound on FM 1960 before turning south onto Ella Boulevard at high speed, according to ABC13. HCSO Capt. Aric Albers said the driver turned off the vehicle's headlights while fleeing in the dark.

Albers said the driver appeared to fail to stay in a single lane in the 16500 block of Ella Boulevard and likely did not see the curb in the median. "Their vehicle struck the curb, and basically lost control at a high rate of speed," Albers said. "The vehicle ended up turning over, rotating onto its roof, its side, and back to its regular standing up position."

Deputies did not lose sight of the vehicle before the wreck, Albers said.

Five people were inside the car. HCSO said most, if not all, were juveniles. One teenager was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. The deceased was believed to be 15 or 16 years old, though the sheriff's office had not confirmed the person's identity.

Three other occupants were taken to area hospitals. CW39 reported the three showed no signs of intoxication and were later released.

A fifth juvenile reportedly fled the crash scene on foot. Deputies searched the area with a helicopter and K-9 units, according to Click2Houston. No update on whether that person was found has been released.

Firearms were recovered from the vehicle, HCSO said.

Investigators were interviewing the surviving occupants at the hospital to determine who was driving. When asked whether the teen who died could have been the driver, Albers said, "No way to tell right now."

HCSO classified the incident as an in-custody death because deputies were actively pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash. The Houston Chronicle reported no criminal charges had been announced.

The stretch of Ella Boulevard near the crash remained closed as investigators collected evidence.
