A 45-year-old tree service worker died Wednesday, Aug. 5, after an incident while cutting a tree near a neighborhood clubhouse in the 13500 block of Cahill Lane in Spring's MUD 5 area.

Harris County Constable Precinct 4 initially reported the man had been electrically shocked, with preliminary information suggesting a tree branch may have made contact with a nearby power line. The constable's office later revised its account, saying the man died from a medical emergency while cutting the tree, according to Fox 26 Houston.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

Constable Mark Herman's office confirmed the death on X, stating the man had been electrically shocked while cutting a tree in the 13500 block of Cahill Lane within MUD 5. That post preceded the updated statement attributing the death to a medical emergency.

The location sits in a neighborhood near Grant Road and Spring Cypress Road. ABC13 reported the victim worked for a tree service company. No other details about the man or his employer have been released.

The investigation remains ongoing. Pct. 4 has not announced a timeline for releasing additional findings.

Tree-trimming safety near power lines

CenterPoint Energy, the area's electric utility, warns that only professionals authorized by the utility are legally permitted to trim or remove trees next to energized power lines.

Trees and plants cause about 20 percent of unplanned power outages in Houston, according to CenterPoint Energy. The utility trims about 1 million trees in the Houston area each year.
