A 55-year-old man was found shot to death in an alleyway behind businesses on Veterans Memorial Drive on Sunday, Sept. 27, in what Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) investigators believe started as an altercation inside an illegal game room.

Jose Bonilla was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds, according to Fox 26 Houston. Deputies responded to the 12400 block of Veterans Memorial Drive, near the Laurel Oaks area, around 7:30 p.m. after an anonymous 911 call.

The location sits across the street from Roberson Middle School, a Spring ISD campus at 12430 Veterans Memorial Dr.

"During the investigation, it appears that the altercation started inside what's best described as an illegal game room," HCSO Sgt. Jason Brown told ABC13 at the scene.

Investigators have not determined whether Bonilla was shot inside or outside the game room. The game room was empty when deputies arrived, but detectives believe several people had been inside before law enforcement reached the scene, according to CW39.

No witnesses were located when deputies arrived.

No suspects have been identified, and the motive remains unknown, HCSO said. Brown said detectives were looking into reports of two possible people involved in the shooting. Investigators also obtained surveillance video from the scene and were reviewing it as part of the investigation, he told ABC13.

The anonymous 911 call and the empty game room left detectives with limited initial leads. HCSO has not issued an official press release or social media statement confirming details of the case as of Tuesday, Sept. 29.
