A free eight-week cooking and nutrition workshop launched Saturday, August 1, at Barbara Bush Branch Library in Spring, and registration is still open for families who want to join the remaining sessions.

The "Healthy Bites, Healthy Moves" series is led by educators from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. Each weekly session runs 60 to 90 minutes and covers meal planning, grocery budgeting, food safety, and physical activity. Lessons may include a cooking demonstration and tasting.

The program is geared toward families with children. Lessons are available in both English and Spanish.

Participants who stick with the full series receive practical items throughout the eight weeks, including measuring cups, exercise bands, and cutting boards. Those who complete all eight lessons earn a cookbook and a graduation certificate.

EFNEP, funded by the USDA, has operated in Texas since 1969 and serves families with limited resources in Harris County and 10 other Texas counties. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, the program targets families most at risk of hunger and food insecurity who may struggle to connect with available support systems. The program's Harris County office is led by agent Khadija Ghaffar.

Classes are taught in small groups of five to 20 adults by paraprofessional educators trained in nutrition education.

Registration is required.

Families can sign up through the Harris County Public Library events page or call Barbara Bush Branch Library at 832-927-7800. The library is at 6817 Cypresswood Drive, Spring.
