Families scrambling for back-to-school outfits before Spring ISD's Wednesday, Aug. 12 first day can pick up free clothes at the Barbara Bush Branch Library on Friday, Aug. 7 and Saturday, Aug. 8.
The Library Thrift Shop runs from 1 to 4 p.m. both days at 6817 Cypresswood Drive. Gently used clothing and accessories are available at no cost, according to the Harris County Public Library events calendar. Visitors can bring their own bag or grab one at the door.
No registration is required.
HCPL library staff organized the giveaway as a sustainability initiative. The library said its goals are to help those in need, give students more clothes for school and protect the environment. The event listing is posted in both English and Spanish, reflecting the branch's service to Spring's Spanish-speaking families.
The thrift shop fits within a broader sustainability push at Harris County Public Library, which also runs Repair Cafes, a Seed Library Program across all 27 branches and composting events. Laura Smith, HCPL's collection development librarian and sustainability team lead, said in a March 2025 Harris County press release about the library's Repair Cafe program: "Most of all, they're about community."
HCPL, which won the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, operates 27 branch libraries across Harris County. The Barbara Bush Branch is open until 8 p.m. on Friday. For questions, call (832) 927-7800.
