Eight giant, glowing gnome sculptures are coming to City Place in Spring later this month as part of a free public art installation open to anyone who wants to wander the grounds and find them.

The exhibition, called Roaming Gnomes, opens Saturday, Sept. 26, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1250 Lake Plaza Drive. It is free and open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., according to Hello Woodlands.

Sydney-based design studio Amigo & Amigo created the installation. The gnomes have never appeared in Texas before, and this is City Place's first large-scale inflatable art piece.

Each gnome has a name: Anthony, Bop, Hock Hai, David, Elvis, Raphael, Nino and Mardini. Each strikes a different pose and wears a different outfit. Internal fans keep the inflatables standing in any weather, PaperCity reported.

The sculptures are spread across plazas, pathways and green spaces rather than grouped in one spot. By day, they are colorful surprises. After dark, they glow.

City Place sits in unincorporated Spring at the intersection of I-45, the Grand Parkway and the Hardy Toll Road, just south of The Woodlands. The mixed-use development is home to major corporate campuses including ExxonMobil, HP Inc. and HPE, drawing thousands of Spring-area workers daily, according to the City Place website.

Amigo & Amigo director Simone Chua and art director Adela Lines Diaz visited City Place in 2023 to scout placement spots for each gnome. Kaileigh Krysztofiak, the studio's North American partnerships manager, told PaperCity that each figure is placed to match its personality. "Anthony is out on his own, and it feels like he's kind of perching out on his own, like he's hiding …" Krysztofiak said.

Setup takes about two full days of unpacking, inflating, weighting and tethering, according to PaperCity.

Lea Weingarten, principal of Weingarten Art Group, said in a statement that the installation brings a "whole new experience" to City Place's public art program. The Texas-based art advisory firm has partnered with City Place on outdoor public art since 2024. Previous installations under the partnership include Graphic Rewilding's "Flower Clouds" and James Tapscott's "Arc ZERO," which earned a spot among the CODAawards Top 100.

Amigo & Amigo has staged installations at more than 50 festivals worldwide. The Roaming Gnomes previously appeared at the Napa Lighted Art Festival in California and the World of Winter Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The exhibition runs daily through Nov. 8 at 1250 Lake Plaza Drive, Spring, TX 77389.
