Vehicle thefts in Harris County fell roughly 41% through the first eight months of 2026, dropping to 8,760 reported incidents from 14,745 during the same stretch last year, according to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) data cited by My Neighborhood News.

Theft of vehicle parts and accessories also declined about 32% countywide during the same period.

The numbers arrived as the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) announced a multi-agency crackdown. On Friday, Sept. 4, the office said on X that its Auto Theft Task Force executed search warrants at three suspected chop shop locations across the county, recovering four stolen vehicles and 252 stolen parts and components. Raids span three locations

Near Tidwell Road and the North Freeway, investigators recovered a stolen vehicle and parts linked to other thefts. One man attempted to flee and was apprehended by deputies. He allegedly had an outstanding felony warrant and was charged with evading on foot and failure to identify as a fugitive.

At a second site on Sandydale Lane, detectives recovered a stolen Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Silverado along with additional parts. A third location near Hill Road and Airline Drive yielded more components HCSO said were confirmed stolen.

The operation drew on HCSO's Auto Theft Unit and SWAT, the DPS Special Operations Group and Criminal Investigations Division, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office SWAT, Homeland Security SRT and the Houston Police Department Auto Theft Unit.

"A lot of times they part these cars out, and each individual part has a serial number and some don't," Detective Jose Castellanos of the HCSO Auto Theft Unit said. "When you separate all that, it is a lot harder to identify that as an actual stolen vehicle."

HCSO said the investigation remains active as detectives work to match recovered components with reported thefts.

No Spring-specific auto theft figures were available, but the countywide data covers unincorporated Harris County areas including Spring.

Harris County residents can get free catalytic converter VIN etching every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 310 Fisher Road in Humble. No appointment is needed. The HCSO Auto Theft Unit paints and etches the vehicle's identification number onto the catalytic converter, making the part easier to trace if stolen.
