Greater Spring and Aldine West residents face a 58% food insecurity rate, among the highest in Harris County. A new Houston Food Bank facility that broke ground Tuesday, Sept. 1, aims to help.
The 310,000-square-foot building at 2121 W. Mt Houston Road in northwest Houston sits on 52 acres donated by Chevron, a parcel valued at $10 million. It is the largest expansion in the food bank's 44-year history and will serve the organization's 18-county footprint across southeast Texas, including Spring.
Houston Food Bank President and CEO Brian Greene said the facility is expected to double the organization's output once it opens in 2028. That increase amounts to an additional $250 million in community resources, Greene said at the Sept. 1 groundbreaking ceremony.
"The idea is we're going to continue to service the community, have more capacity to distribute significantly more food, but do it in a way that is transformative for neighbors' lives," Greene said.
The building, part of the food bank's CORE program, will include expanded cold storage, a federally qualified health center, a commercial kitchen, a recreational center and a community food hall featuring local vendors. Volunteer capacity will also grow, which Greene said is key to expanding distribution.
The need is urgent. About 155,000 fewer people in the nine-county Houston metro area received SNAP benefits in June 2026 than a year earlier, an 18% decline, according to a Kinder Institute analysis of state data reported by My Neighborhood News. Greene told the outlet in July that demand for charitable food assistance had "increased dramatically" as enrollment fell.
Jim Gable, a Chevron representative and Houston Food Bank board member, said the two organizations have partnered for more than 14 years. He called the facility a product of collaboration among nonprofits, government and the private sector. Officials said the site was chosen for its proximity to Highway 249 and Ella Boulevard.
Construction will proceed in phases, with initial operations expected sometime in 2028.
