Klein Cain beat previously unbeaten Tomball 55-38 on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the Hurricanes' District 15-6A opener at Klein Memorial Stadium.

The 3-0 Hurricanes pulled off what VYPE Houston's updated Class 6A rankings called "the biggest shakeup" heading into district play. Klein Cain entered the season picked sixth in the district after missing the playoffs in 2025 with a 4-6 record. Tomball, ranked No. 11 in the state by VYPE and projected as the district's top team, had outscored opponents 122-26 through three games.

None of that mattered Saturday.

Head coach James Clancy's offense put up 55 points in front of a packed home crowd. Junior quarterback Jace Hanks has averaged more than 200 passing yards per game through three contests with seven touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He has added 244 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Senior running back Eyan Johnson, a second-team all-district pick in 2025, has piled up nearly 450 all-purpose yards and seven combined touchdowns through three games. Junior tailback Earl Oguinn Jr. gives the Hurricanes another weapon as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

Hanks's top targets in the passing game are Cooper Karns, a first-team all-district selection last season, along with Israel Smith and Tyson Freeman.

The defense held its own against a Tomball rushing attack that had gashed opponents all season. Senior defensive lineman Jaemin Gilstrap anchors the front alongside linebackers Jerod Spraberry and Gage Hansberger. Junior linemen Mir Ibragimov and Bryson Bucola generate pass-rush pressure.

Klein Cain returned 14 starters this fall and now owns a 5-1 all-time record against Tomball since the series began in 2020, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Chronicle's Jon Poorman had predicted a 33-23 Tomball win.

The Hurricanes last won the district title in 2024, when they finished 9-2. VYPE named Klein Cain its Team of the Week for the victory. An October gauntlet awaits: Klein Collins, Klein High and Klein Oak are all on the schedule. VYPE ranks Klein Collins 17th in its Class 6A poll.
