Spring-area parents who believe their child shows advanced academic ability have about five weeks to nominate them for Klein ISD's Gifted and Talented program.

The district opened its parent referral window Monday, August 3, and will accept nominations through Friday, September 4, according to a district announcement posted the same day. Parents can submit referrals at kisd.us/gt.

The program, run by Klein ISD's Advanced Academics department under Director Kathleen Plott, targets students who show potential for advanced cognitive ability, extraordinary creativity, or critical thinking skills that go beyond what the general classroom offers. The district describes it as nationally recognized and says its mission is to identify students who need challenging, differentiated instruction beyond the standard curriculum. Services include enrichment, investigative research, and academic acceleration across the district's 51 campuses.

Parents don't need to wait for a teacher recommendation. The referral window is specifically for families to put a child forward for G&T testing on their own. The district encourages parents to act if they see a child demonstrating strong creative or analytical thinking at home, even if that potential hasn't surfaced in a classroom setting.

Klein ISD has run a similar referral window at the start of each school year. The structure remains consistent: about a month for families to submit nominations before testing begins.

The district has not published details on what happens after a referral is submitted or when testing takes place. Parents with questions can call Klein ISD at (832) 249-4000.
