Spring-area families can save up to 8.25% on back-to-school clothing, shoes, and supplies as Texas Tax-Free Weekend runs Friday, August 7, through midnight Sunday, August 9.
With Spring ISD and Klein ISD classes starting Wednesday, August 12, the timing gives parents one final push to stock up before the school year begins.
What qualifies
Most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 per item are exempt from state and local sales tax during the three-day window, according to the Texas Comptroller's office. There's no limit on the number of qualifying items a shopper can buy.
Tennis shoes, jogging suits, and swimsuits qualify. Jewelry, handbags, watches, computers, textbooks, and athletic gear like football pads and golf cleats do not.
Student backpacks, including wheeled versions and messenger bags, are tax-free under $100. Shoppers can buy up to 10 backpacks at once without providing an exemption certificate.
Online purchases also qualify, as long as payment is made during the August 7–9 window. Items can ship or arrive later. One catch: shipping and handling charges count toward the $100 per-item price limit.
The savings add up
The math is straightforward. Texas charges a combined sales tax rate of up to 8.25% in Harris County, meaning a family spending $500 on qualifying items could save more than $41. Statewide, officials predicted last year's tax holiday would save Texas families $133.2 million, according to the Houston Chronicle. A National Retail Federation survey found families with K-12 students plan to spend an average of $874 on back-to-school clothing and supplies this year.
Constable's office: stay alert
The Harris County Precinct 3 Constable's Office, led by Constable Mark Herman, issued a safety advisory on Sunday, August 2, warning that the busy shopping weekend attracts criminal activity because shoppers are distracted by children, crowds, and long lists.
The office offered five tips for shoppers heading to Spring-area retail corridors along I-45, Cypresswood, and the Grand Parkway:
- Have a plan before heading out.
- Lock your vehicle, take your keys, and hide belongings from view.
- Park in well-lit areas and travel in groups.
- Keep a close eye on young children, especially in parking lots.
- Have keys in hand when returning to your vehicle and limit items carried.
If you're charged tax by mistake
Shoppers who pay sales tax on a qualifying item during the holiday can request a refund from the seller or file Form 00-985 directly with the Texas Comptroller's office.
Tax-Free Weekend runs through midnight Sunday, August 9. Spring ISD's first day of school is three days later.
