Spring ISD families packed Dekaney High School on Saturday, Aug. 1, for the district's annual Back-to-School Expo, picking up free school supplies, haircuts, health screenings and registration help with the first day of school now one week away.

The district called the turnout a success. Spring ISD said on X on Tuesday, Aug. 4, that the expo was "one for the books," thanking families, staff and community partners who attended.

The event was free.

It ran from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Dekaney, 22351 Imperial Valley Drive. Families could get vision and hearing screenings, pre-K language testing, help completing the required Annual Student Update and food from the Houston Food Bank while supplies lasted.

Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar said ahead of the event that the expo aims to remove barriers, connect families with resources and ensure every student starts the school year ready to succeed. The district described the expo as part of a "family-centered approach" to the new school year.

What families still need to do

The first day of school for most Spring ISD campuses is Wednesday, Aug. 12. Two Accelerating Campus Excellence schools, Bailey Middle School and Ponderosa Elementary, start two days earlier on Monday, Aug. 10.

All returning families must complete the Annual Student Update before Aug. 12. Those who missed the expo and need enrollment or registration help can contact Inelja Taylor Rucker, parent support assistant, at 281-891-6637 or [email protected].

Klein ISD also starts Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Sales tax holiday this weekend

Texas holds its back-to-school sales tax holiday Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9, according to Houston Public Media. Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks valued at $100 or less are exempt from sales tax, both in-store and online.
