Spring ISD and Klein ISD families have days to finish back-to-school prep before both districts open classrooms on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The most urgent deadline hits first: Texas Tax-Free Weekend runs Saturday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 9. Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 per item are exempt from sales tax, according to the Texas Comptroller's Office. Items qualify whether purchased in-store or online from Texas-based retailers.

Families shopping at Houston Premium Outlets on Northwest Freeway should expect a visible law enforcement presence. Harris County Constable Mark Herman's Precinct 4 deputies coordinated with store management there ahead of the weekend rush, the constable's office said Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Two Spring ISD campuses start Monday

Not every Spring ISD student has until Aug. 12. Bailey Middle School and Ponderosa Elementary families report Monday, Aug. 10, two days early. Both campuses operate under Spring ISD's Accelerating Campus Excellence turnaround model, which adds instructional time. The district posted the reminder July 29, noting the early start applies only to those two schools.

Spring ISD enrolled 33,575 students across 41 campuses last school year, according to the Texas Education Agency. Superintendent Kregg Cuellar joined Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis at a Tax-Free Weekend event on Wednesday, Aug. 5, to promote back-to-school readiness.

Registration still open

Returning Spring ISD students must complete their Annual Student Update before Aug. 12, according to the district's enrollment page. That deadline is firm. The Spring ISD Community Engagement Center offered walk-in registration support with hours of 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Wednesday. As we reported Aug. 2, new enrollees also need birth certificates on file.

Klein ISD board meets Monday on November election

The Klein ISD board of trustees holds its regular meeting Monday, Aug. 10, where trustees are expected to call a Nov. 3 election for two of the board's seven seats, according to Community Impact. The board is led by President Doug James, Vice President Dustin Qualls and Secretary Nicole Peters, with Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown. Which two seats are on the ballot has not been publicly confirmed.
