Spring High hosts Nimitz at Thorne Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 22, in a District 14-6A game with playoff implications for both teams.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. The Lions sit at 1-3 in district play, based on game-by-game results from MaxPreps. Their lone district win came Oct. 8 against Eisenhower, 29-20. Spring dropped its most recent game to MacArthur in overtime on Oct. 15, 23-31.
Nimitz enters off a convincing 35-21 home win over Eisenhower on Oct. 16, according to MaxPreps. The Cougars are 4-3 overall. That Eisenhower victory was a bounce-back after Nimitz fell 6-37 to district-leading Westfield on Oct. 8.
Head coach Cornelius Harmon's squad has been potent at Thorne Stadium, winning five of their last six home games and averaging 30 points in those contests, MaxPreps reported. The Cougars earned a share of the District 14-6A title last season alongside Westfield and Aldine Davis and are chasing a sixth consecutive playoff berth, the Houston Chronicle noted ahead of Nimitz's Oct. 8 game against Westfield. Nimitz's only two non-district losses this season came against Barbers Hill and Cypress Ranch, which had a combined 10-1 record at the time of that Chronicle report.
The Lions are in year one under head coach KaRon Coleman, who came from Hightower after Spring went 2-8 in 2025. Coleman inherited 15 returning starters, VYPE Houston reported in its August preseason district preview. That preview listed running back Vincent Lee as the featured ball carrier, with Elijah Guidry and Malyron Gamble leading the offensive line. On defense, VYPE highlighted linemen Chase Lewis and Kelvin Sumo up front and defensive backs Kevunn Lauderdale and Landon McLenon.
Nimitz counters with quarterback Edwin Brown, whom VYPE named the district's preseason Breakout Player of the Year, citing his experience as backup to his brother AJ. Running back Da'Kari Franklin shares the offensive workload.
Westfield sits atop the district at 5-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play, with a 37-7 win over Aldine Davis on Oct. 17 its latest result, NBC DFW reported. A win Thursday would keep Nimitz squarely in the playoff picture, while Spring needs a victory to avoid falling further behind in the race for one of the district's four postseason spots.
