Spring neighborhoods can register for National Night Out by Sept. 9

Spring-area neighborhoods have until Wednesday, Sept. 9, to register block parties and cookouts for this year's National Night Out with the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO).

The countywide event falls on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Civic associations, apartment communities, churches, schools and other groups can sign up through the HCSO's registration page, according to the sheriff's office Community Engagement Division.

National Night Out is an annual campaign that pairs neighborhood gatherings with visits from law enforcement and first responders. The National Association of Town Watch launched it in 1984, when roughly 2.5 million people in 400 communities across 23 states took part. The event now draws participants in all 50 states, U.S. territories and on military bases worldwide, as My Neighborhood News reported.

Most of the country holds National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August. Texas and a handful of other areas observe it on the first Tuesday in October.

What organizers need to know

HCSO's registration form asks for the name of the hosting community or organization, the event description and location, expected attendance, event hours and a contact person. Groups can host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, youth activities or public-information booths.

Some Spring-area HOAs and civic associations may already be planning subdivision-wide events. Residents who want to join an existing celebration should check HOA websites, community emails and neighborhood social media pages before organizing a separate gathering.

How HCSO describes the program

The sheriff's office says National Night Out strengthens neighborhood relationships and creates opportunities for residents and law enforcement to connect. Its Community Engagement Division focuses on crime-prevention education and building relationships across Harris County's neighborhoods.
