A 1.5-mile hike-and-bike trail is under construction along Faulkey Gully in the Cypress Creek area, funded by a $1.6 million commitment from two local utility districts and backed by Harris County.
Faulkey Gully Municipal Utility District and Malcomson Road Utility District each pledged $800,000 toward the project, which will pave an existing dirt path into an asphalt trail running along the north side of Faulkey Gully from Spring Cypress Road to Guernsey Road, according to the Faulkey Gully MUD website. Harris County committed to covering the remaining costs, though the county's share has not been disclosed.
The project will also add a pedestrian bridge and a new underpass at North Eldridge Parkway, Community Impact reported. Once finished, the trail will connect to an existing network within Northwest Harris County MUD No. 5 that spans more than five miles across several Cypress Creek subdivisions. A separate connection will reach a 1.9-mile asphalt trail extending to Lakewood Forest Drive.
Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom S. Ramsey toured the construction site on Sept. 3 with community members. The commissioner's office said on X on Monday, Oct. 12 that progress continues, sharing video of project partners and a resident discussing the trail.
Michelle Steadman, a Faulkey Gully MUD representative who joined the September tour, praised the collaboration. "This is really what MUD and county partners are all about!" Steadman said, according to a Sept. 3 post from the Precinct 3 office.
To help cover its $800,000 share, Faulkey Gully MUD introduced a voluntary $5 monthly Beautification Fee on residents' utility bills. Residents who do not wish to pay can opt out at municipalops.com/districts/faulkey-gully-mud/opt-out. The district's website states the trail funding goal has been met.
The $5 fee will continue to support a new sidewalk partnership with Harris County along Grant Road and future sidewalk projects in the district.
Precinct 3 first announced the trail in early May, describing it as a way to expand the local trail network. No completion date has been publicly announced. Residents can check the Faulkey Gully MUD website for project updates.
