Spring native Helio Meza beat his own teammate by 0.025 seconds on Sunday, Sept. 6, to win a Trans Am TA2 race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Ontario, Canada.

The margin was the closest finish in the series' 61-year history, the Trans Am Series said on X.

Meza, driving the No. 28 Alessandro's Racing Chevrolet Camaro for Team SLR, qualified on pole with a lap of 1:18.192 around the 2.459-mile road course. He was more than two tenths of a second faster than teammate Alon Day in qualifying, according to Trans Am's official results.

The race itself matched the qualifying battle. Meza and Day traded positions through 41 laps, multiple cautions and restarts before drag-racing each other down the Mario Andretti Straightaway to the checkered flag, RACER reported.

"Man, what a finish," Meza said after the race. "That was definitely the hardest race I've had all year."

He credited Day for racing him clean and called it the kind of race he enjoys most because it demands the hardest work.

Day finished second in the No. 17 JSSI Chevrolet Camaro. Lanie Buice completed a Team SLR podium sweep in third, picking up her first overall podium in the TA2 series. Noah Harmon and Adrian Wlostowski rounded out the top five.

The win keeps Meza in the championship hunt with two races left in the 12-race season. He still trails Day in the standings after disappointing results at Road America and Watkins Glen. Speed Sport noted in a pre-race preview that Meza appeared faster on pure pace but that bad luck had pushed Day ahead in points.

Meza said his mindset and the team's approach will not change despite the deficit. He plans to keep executing the same way and said the team is never content.

The final two rounds of the 2026 Trans Am season are at VIRginia International Raceway and Circuit of The Americas.
