A 14-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter near Theiss Elementary School on Wednesday, Aug. 26. She is the third child on an e-scooter hit by a car in the Precinct 4 service area in one week.
The crash happened at the intersection of Theiss Mail Route Road and Theisswood Road in the 17700 block, according to Constable Mark Herman's Precinct 4 office. EMS transported the teen to a local hospital. She remained hospitalized as of the morning of Aug. 27, the constable's office said. Her condition has not been released by the agency.
A preliminary investigation indicated the girl entered the intersection and was struck by a motor vehicle. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Two earlier crashes
On Aug. 19, a 10-year-old girl was hit at the intersection of Lincolns Meadow Drive and Dukes Run Drive after she entered the intersection without stopping at a stop sign, according to KHOU. Deputies applied a tourniquet because of significant bleeding before she was taken to a hospital. That driver also remained at the scene.
On Friday, Aug. 21, a 14-year-old was struck while riding an e-scooter in the 26200 block of Kuykendahl Road near W New Harmony. The Houston Chronicle reported that crash occurred in The Woodlands.
In all three incidents, preliminary investigations indicated the child entered the roadway or intersection before being hit. No charges have been announced.
School year context
All three crashes occurred within two weeks of the start of the school year. Constable Mark Herman's office posted on Aug. 13 that deputies were assisting local school district police departments with dismissal safety throughout the precinct. The office has not publicly announced any specific enforcement or education initiative targeting e-scooter safety as of Aug. 27.
Area municipalities have adopted e-scooter restrictions. Houston City Council approved a citywide nighttime curfew on e-scooters from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Conroe ISD banned e-bikes and e-scooters on district campuses. In Pearland, parents can be cited if their child violates city e-scooter rules, according to the Chronicle.
No updates on the conditions of the children injured Aug. 19 and Aug. 21 have been released.
