Retirees looking for a reason to get out of the house in September have at least three organizations within a few miles of Spring actively recruiting volunteers for roles that range from delivering hot meals to reading with kindergartners.

Northwest Assistance Ministries, the Houston Food Bank's North Branch and Harris County Public Library's Barbara Bush Branch all have openings suited to older adults who want flexible, meaningful work without a commute to downtown Houston.

NAM needs bingo callers and meal servers

Northwest Assistance Ministries, the nonprofit at 15555 Kuykendahl Road, posted a call for its "Young @ Heart" senior program on July 28. Three weekly slots are open: a bingo caller on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a café meal server on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an exercise class substitute on Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Beyond the senior program, NAM also needs help delivering Meals on Wheels, packaging groceries, staffing its resale store and greeting visitors. Alfred L. Cave, NAM's president and CEO, leads an organization that reported $9.3 million in revenue for the fiscal year ending September 2024.

Interested volunteers can apply at namonline.org/volunteer or email [email protected].

Houston Food Bank's North Branch sorts food close to home

The Houston Food Bank's North Branch at 146 Knobcrest Drive in Houston sits about 10 minutes south of Spring. The 128,000-square-foot facility manages dry goods, refrigerated and frozen food and disaster-response supplies. Volunteer shifts include building home-delivery kits and assembling disaster relief boxes. Sign up at houstonfoodbank.org/give-help and look for "HFB-North Branch" on the volunteer calendar.

Library literacy program starts Sept. 14

Harris County Public Library's Barbara Bush Branch at 6817 Cypresswood Drive in Spring connects volunteers with neighbors who want to improve their reading, practice English or prepare for citizenship through HCPL's volunteer portal.

The library system's Book Buddies program, which pairs adult volunteers with kindergarten-through-third-grade students for one-on-one reading, begins its fall session on Monday, Sept. 14 at the Maud Smith Marks Branch. Sessions run 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Nov. 16.

Edward Melton, HCPL's executive director, described the program's appeal in a March 2026 Library Journal profile: "Children get a chance to explore the library, find materials that they want to read, and build that enjoyment."

The need is real. One in three Harris County adults have low functional literacy, according to Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, who cited the figure in the same profile.

Research backs the benefits

A Harvard study of nearly 13,000 Americans over 50 found that volunteering at least 100 hours a year was associated with stronger sense of purpose, more positive emotion and greater physical activity. A University of Manchester longitudinal study of 3,740 retirees found that volunteers reported fewer depressive symptoms and higher life satisfaction, especially when they felt appreciated.

More options across the region

Spring-area seniors willing to drive a bit farther can also consider Harris County Master Gardeners (txmg.org/hcmga), Montgomery County Food Bank (mcfoodbank.org), Montgomery County Animal Shelter (mcaspets.org), Celebrate With a Cake in Porter (celebratewithacake.org) and New Caney New Horizons (ncnewhorizons.org).
