Spring Westfield lost 3-0 to No. 3 Richmond Randle on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Traylor Stadium in Rosenberg.

The shutout dropped the Mustangs to 1-1 in a non-district test against one of the state's toughest defenses. Randle, the defending Class 5A Division II state runner-up now competing in Division I, improved to 2-0. The Lions have allowed just 14 total points through two games.

A single field goal decided it. Randle senior tailback Landen Williams-Callis, a University of Texas commit, ripped off a 35-yard run in the third quarter to set up kicker Ayo Awobokun for the game's only points, according to Sports Illustrated. Williams-Callis finished with 149 yards on 33 carries but never reached the end zone.

Westfield had a chance to tie late. The Mustangs lined up a field goal attempt with less than 10 minutes remaining, but Randle blocked it. Williams-Callis then sealed the win with a 6-yard run on third-and-4 with under two minutes left.

The Mustangs' defense deserves credit for keeping Williams-Callis out of the end zone. He has rushed for at least 100 yards in 42 of his 47 career games and now has more than 7,900 career rushing yards. His 134 career touchdowns sit two short of the Houston-area record of 136 set by his cousin, former Lamar Consolidated star Jacquizz Rodgers, per Sports Illustrated.

Despite the loss, Westfield landed at No. 16 in the VYPE Houston Class 6A Top 25 for Week 3. Randle climbed one spot to No. 3 in the Dave Campbell's Texas Football poll, distributed by the Associated Press, CW39 Houston reported.

VYPE Houston described the result as Randle having "snuck by Class 6A Westfield," a nod to how close the Mustangs came against a 5A powerhouse.

Westfield hosts No. 24 Willis on Thursday, Sept. 10. Willis enters at 2-0 after beating Klein Collins 38-28 in Week 2.
