The Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is searching for a driver who fled a fatal crash on Interstate 45.

Deputies said the unidentified driver abandoned passenger Carlexia Shields after crashing into a tree in the 19900 block of the North Freeway, as first reported by ABC13. Shields was later pronounced dead at a hospital, HCSO said.

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m., according to ABC13's report published Oct. 26. The driver was heading northbound in a black 2026 Hyundai Elantra with Shields in the front passenger seat, deputies said.

A witness reported the Elantra veered off the road into a grass median on the east side of the roadway before striking a tree with the front right portion of the vehicle, according to HCSO.

The driver did not stay to help Shields and fled the scene on foot, deputies said. An ambulance transported Shields to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

No other vehicles were involved, the sheriff's office said.

The HCSO Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating the crash. ABC13's report did not include a description of the driver or a contact number for tips in this case.
