A Harris County mother who ran out of gas with her two children in the car called the sheriff's office because she didn't know who else to turn to. Deputy Syed Sultan showed up, filled her tank and got her back on the road.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office named Sultan its "Teammate of the Week" on Friday, Aug. 14, recognizing the nine-year veteran for the roadside assist in north Harris County's District 6, which covers the Spring area.

"I ran out of gas on the way to the gas station only 1/4 mile away and my two autistic kiddos were in the car," the mother wrote in a statement shared by HCSO on Instagram. "I didn't know who else to call. Deputy Sultan showed up and assured me I was ok."

Sultan helped set up a gas bottle, filled the tank and sent the family on their way.

She just wanted to get her kids to the park.

The mother said she had been having her roughest day, and Sultan's response turned it around. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and the department noted Sultan turned "her roughest day into one of relief."

Sultan has spent his entire law enforcement career with HCSO, serving all nine years as a patrol deputy. He is currently assigned to District 6 in north Harris County.

The "Teammate of the Week" is a recurring HCSO program that highlights deputies for acts of service and community connection. Earlier the same week, a Cypress nonprofit delivered water and Gatorade to Spring-area deputies working in 98-degree heat, as we reported Aug. 14.
