Three local musicians will play stripped-down alternative, emo and indie rock inside the Barbara Bush Branch Library on Saturday, Aug. 8, in a free after-hours concert doubling as a banned book donation drive for Sunrise Movement Houston.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 6 p.m. at the library, 6817 Cypresswood Drive. The branch normally closes at 5 p.m. on Saturdays, making this a rare evening event for one of Harris County Public Library's busiest locations.
The Barbara Bush Library Friends, the branch's nonprofit support group, will collect donated books on behalf of Sunrise Movement Houston's Banned Libraries project. Anyone who brings a banned book receives a button. The drive also accepts children's, teen and adult novels exploring community, multiculturalism, cultural anthropology and STEM themes. Titles like Persepolis, Stonewall and The Handmaid's Tale are among suggested donations, according to the library's social media promotion.
Sunrise Movement Houston's Banned Libraries working group is building a network of little free libraries stocked with books removed from school shelves across the Houston area. The group installed its first little library at 4205 Lyons Ave. in Houston, which opened to the public July 25. The organization says on its newsletter it aims to build five total.
The library said in a July 23 Instagram post that it is collaborating with Sunrise Movement to help fill the group's banned little libraries. The HCPL event listing describes the show as featuring "your favorite musicians', favorite musicians."
The concert is billed as for mature audiences. Minors are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
