The nationally touring Color Vibe 5K will make its Houston-area debut at City Place in Spring on Saturday, Sept. 19, marking the development's first major paid-entry race event.
The untimed 3.1-mile race starts at 9 a.m. at 1495 Lake Plaza Dr., in the parking lot behind Star Cinema Grill, according to Hello Woodlands. Participants begin dressed in white and pass through four color stations where volunteers shower them with brightly colored, biodegradable powder. Check-in opens at 7 a.m., and the event wraps by noon.
No timing chips. No winners. The race is open to runners, walkers, families pushing strollers and first-time 5K participants.
"City Place offers the perfect backdrop for our first event in the market," said Nate Sorensen, event director for Color Vibe. He added that the event welcomes people whether they want to run, walk or simply enjoy the atmosphere.
After the finish line, a post-race festival features a live DJ, food and beverage vendors, interactive activities and the event's signature "Color Blast," a synchronized color throw involving thousands of participants.
Color Vibe is produced by the same organization behind the Water Lantern Festival, which has drawn crowds to City Place for several years. Combined, the organization says its Houston-area events have attracted more than 25,000 participants. The Water Lantern Festival returns to City Place Plaza, 1250 Lake Plaza Dr., for three sessions Nov. 20-22, with gates opening at 2:30 p.m. each day. Early bird tickets start at $30.99.
The Color Vibe booking is a new dimension for City Place's event lineup. The 2,000-acre Springwoods Village development, built by Coventry Development Corporation at the intersection of the Grand Parkway, Hardy Toll Road and Interstate 45, already hosts hundreds of mostly free events annually, including concerts, outdoor fitness classes and seasonal festivals. As we reported Aug. 5, City Place also debuts free fly-fishing clinics with Orvis on Sept. 12.
Andrew Giammalva, vice president of Coventry Development Corporation of Houston, said Aug. 5 when announcing the Orvis event that "at City Place, we're always looking for new ways to activate our parks and natural spaces through experiences that encourage exploration and discovery."
Advance registration for the Color Vibe 5K is encouraged. Onsite registration will be available while supplies last. Details and sign-up are at cityplacenow.com.
