A 10-year-old girl suffered serious injuries Wednesday evening, Aug. 19, after a vehicle struck her while she was riding an electric scooter at the intersection of Lincolns Meadow Drive and Dukes Run Drive in the Spring area.

The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office said its preliminary investigation found the girl entered the intersection without stopping at a stop sign and was hit by a motor vehicle. Deputies described it as a "major auto-pedestrian crash" in a live alert posted to X that evening.

Deputies applied a tourniquet to the girl because of significant bleeding before she was transported to a local hospital, according to Click2Houston. Her condition had not been released as of Wednesday evening.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, the constable's office confirmed.

The crash marks the second time in less than a week that Precinct 4 deputies have responded to a juvenile struck by a vehicle while on a scooter. On Friday, Aug. 14, the constable's office reported a separate auto-pedestrian crash in its service area involving a juvenile on a scooter; that child sustained minor injuries, and the driver also remained on scene.

E-scooter injuries up 11,000% in Harris County

The back-to-back incidents come as motorized e-vehicle injuries in Harris County have risen 11,000 percent over five years, according to Harris County Public Health statistics cited by Harris County Emergency Services District 11.

Dr. Jay Kovar, medical director of Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare, issued a safety warning on Aug. 12 urging parents and young riders to discuss e-bike safety before heading out on neighborhood streets.

"E-bikes can be a great way to get around, but riders need to understand that they are operating a motorized vehicle capable of reaching significant speeds," Kovar said in the Aug. 12 statement.

ESD 11 encouraged riders to understand how their device operates, follow traffic laws, remain alert and use protective equipment.

One week into the school year

Spring ISD students returned to class on Aug. 12, meaning Wednesday's crash occurred exactly one week into the new school year.

The investigation remains open. The constable's office has not announced any charges. Residents can monitor the Precinct 4 Constable's Office X account, @Pct4Constable, for updates on the girl's condition and the investigation.
