Two ready-to-eat salads pulled from Randalls shelves in Texas may still be in refrigerators near Spring, and the sell-through window closes Monday, Aug. 10.

Albertsons Companies announced Saturday, Aug. 8, that it is voluntarily recalling four products containing jalapeños supplied by Taylor Farms. Two of the recalled items were sold at Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas: the Roasted Corn Maque Choux Salad (UPC 29479400000) and the ReadyMeals Roasted Corn Maque Choux Salad (UPC 29479500000). Both carry sell-through dates of Aug. 3 through Aug. 10.

The nearest Randalls to Spring is at 5219 FM 1960 W in the Champions Forest area, and the store offers ReadyMeals service. Shoppers who purchased either salad should not eat it. Albertsons said customers can dispose of the product or return it to the store for a full refund.

345 illnesses, 36 hospitalizations

The recall stems from a broader FDA investigation into a multistate Salmonella Javiana outbreak tied to fresh jalapeños traced to a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. As of early August, the FDA reported 345 illnesses across 27 states, including Texas, with 36 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.

Most patients interviewed reported eating at Mexican-style restaurants during the investigation period. The FDA advised consumers and food-service businesses not to eat, serve or sell the recalled peppers.

Taylor Farms initiated the supplier recall after its distributor, Direct Roots, identified a supply-chain connection to the jalapeños under investigation.

What to watch for

Salmonella symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Illness typically begins 12 to 72 hours after exposure and lasts four to seven days. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face higher risk of severe illness.
