Klein Collins erased a 10-point halftime deficit and beat previously undefeated Klein Cain 40-24 on Saturday, Oct. 3. The win lifted the Tigers to No. 14 in the VYPE Class 6A Top 25, published Sunday, Oct. 4.
The District 15-6A game started Thursday, Oct. 1, but lightning forced a suspension at 10:33 p.m. in the second quarter with Klein Cain leading 14-7. When play resumed Saturday, the Hurricanes extended their lead to 24-14 by halftime.
Then Klein Collins shut them out.
Senior quarterback Brylon Jefferson threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third in the second half to fuel a 26-0 run, according to SI's game recap. Jefferson connected with senior wide receiver Quincy Armstead for a score in the third quarter, and Jamir Davis added a rushing touchdown to give the Tigers a 28-24 lead after three.
Jefferson sealed it with a touchdown pass to Tyler Penright on fourth-and-12 with 3:46 left. The defense did its part, too. Landon Gillett intercepted Klein Cain quarterback Jace Hanks in the fourth quarter, and Daniel Rogers picked off another pass on the same drive sequence.
VYPE's Matt Malatesta highlighted the result, writing that Klein Collins "also picked up a huge win, knocking off Klein Cain in a game that was delayed by weather and eventually pushed to Saturday."
Klein Cain had entered the game 4-0 and had scored at least 40 points in every contest this season. The Hurricanes, who last won the District 15-6A title in 2024, dropped to No. 25 in the new VYPE poll.
The win moves head coach Adrian Mitchell's Tigers to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in district play, tied with Klein for first place in District 15-6A. Klein is 5-0 overall and hosts Klein Cain on Thursday, Oct. 8.
Klein Collins hosts Tomball on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m.
