A Spring mother faces a $500,000 bail after the Harris County Sheriff's Office charged her with injury to a child, alleging she knew her boyfriend was beating her 2-year-old daughter but stayed silent to keep him out of jail.
Jazmin Cisneros, 28, was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 12, days after her boyfriend Gerardo Gonzalez, 29, was also charged with injury to a child. Prosecutors say Gonzalez admitted to punching the girl in the head and across her body and stomping on her, according to ABC13 Houston.
The child remains hospitalized in critical condition. Court documents filed at the time of Gonzalez's arrest stated the girl was not expected to survive.
How the case unfolded
The investigation began the evening of Friday, Aug. 7, when Cisneros and Gonzalez brought the unresponsive toddler to an Exxon gas station near Cypresswood Drive and Spring Dane Drive and asked for help, according to Fox 26 Houston.
HCSO Precinct 4 deputies performed CPR until EMS arrived. The girl was taken to a local hospital, where staff discovered multiple life-threatening injuries, then airlifted to a second facility for surgery.
Gonzalez was arrested and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury on Aug. 8. A judge set his bond at $1 million with conditions including house arrest and no contact with the victim's family.
The couple directed investigators to a home on Rendezvous Court in Spring, which was secured as a second scene.
What prosecutors allege about Cisneros
Prosecutors allege Cisneros knew about prior abuse but did not report it because she did not want Gonzalez to go to jail. She has not been accused of physically harming the child herself.
Her bail was set at $500,000 during a probable cause hearing Tuesday evening, Aug. 11.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on X on Tuesday, Aug. 11, that the toddler remained in critical condition and that investigators were still working to determine the full circumstances of the child's injuries.
When the boyfriend's arrest was first announced, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, "Cases involving children are among the most heartbreaking first responders encounter, and we remain committed to seeking justice on her behalf."
HCSO homicide detectives and Child Protective Services are involved in the ongoing investigation. No future court dates for either suspect have been announced.
As we reported Aug. 7, deputies initially responded to the gas station after the child was found unresponsive.
